MMA Workout

MMA, or mixed martial arts, requires discipline and adherence to a proper schedule of strength training. Primarily, when you’re doing an MMA workout, you’re focusing on agility and strength, as well as muscle endurance.

When you begin, you begin with safety in mind, and gradually increase workouts until they become highly intense — but not until you’re ready for them. MMA workouts are focused on you, the “martial arts trainee,” and are intended to turn you into a professional.

Martial arts have been around for a long time, and are among the oldest of “workouts” in history. As a mixed martial arts “trainee,” you perform against an opponent, ideally, such that you are trained to punch, wrestle, push and pull your opponent in a match.

Incidentally, one of the most important parts of an MMA workout is that you also learn how to control your emotions, which is essential during a match. That’s because if you are fearful, angry or nervous, it’s only going to be to your detriment.

Exercises performed in an MMA workout

Even if you don’t actually compete in MMA, a mixed martial arts workout is very beneficial to your physical (and mental) health.

Warm-up

Part of your workout should be your warm-up. Start slowly, and then slowly build up your endurance and speed, such that you have more challenging workouts as you go. For example, you can do exercises that user bodyweight such as press ups, sprints, dips, pull-ups, running, jumping jacks, skipping or jumping rope, or working on an exercise bike.

Cardio exercises

Part of your MMA workout should also be focused on cardio exercise. Cycling and running are two major elements in cardio exercises, and many MMA competitors start their workouts with a run after warm-up. If you’re just beginning, start slowly and then work up to being able to complete a 2 to 5 mile run once you are in good condition. You can also utilize circuit training as part of your workout, and in fact this should be included.

Punching, etc., exercises

Another part of your workout should include working out with a punching bag, where you practice kicking and using your knees and elbows on heavy, solid targets. Getting something solid will also help you get used to “jabbing” with shots. Heavy bag punching is a very beneficial part of your MMA training.

Working out with a partner

If you have someone you can practice and workout with, it helps to have him or her practice as a partner — as long as you’re evenly matched. The most important part of a mixed martial arts workout with a partner is to have a good defense, instead of “attacking” your partner. You should also wear gloves and protective headgear.

Again, remember that an MMA workout is just as much about your emotional control as it is about your physical fitness, so include practicing emotional control as part of your MMA training, too.

The “warm up” for MMA almost sounds like a regular workout to me!

This seems like a good site for a lot of information on the popular but still niche subject of MMA. My husband is interested in this sport; he plays games and watches UFC, so I’ll have to show him this blog!!

This blog is very informative,I’m surprised that to be in shape you need to run at least 2-5 miles. This blog is very nice and my friend said he might sign up for this sport. If he does I will tell him about this site so in can get some info on MMA fighting.

MMA is such a great way to get fit. I remember when I was just a little tubby and I used MMA is lose those extra pounds, plus, I really toned up! What you said about MMA taking discipline is so true. Many people say they’ll get into the MMA workout, but once they try it, they begin to think its to hard and just give up.
    Great blog you have going.
    Cheers,
    Barry.

I had never heard of MMA before, but it sounds like a really great workout! I’ve been interested in martial arts for a while, this seems like it would be a good way to get started in that. Thanks for all of the information!

I used to be a wrestler in high school, and I have to say that that was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. To be honest, I thought this workout does not seem that intense, but then again I had not tried it yet. I have now tried the workout, and just WOW. This is one of the greatest workouts for anyone to do.

MMA workout is a great way to tone up your body, build muscles, and strengthen your mind. I like how the workout contains different exercises so that you don’t stick with and get bored with one exercise routine. This is an interesting article.

Wow! I never knew about MMA until just now. I’d never heard of it before but it sounds very interesting to watch. I also didn’t know that in any type of martial arts, emotional control was just as important as physical control. I use to believe that it was just based on your physical fitness until I read this article and realized that it is true that you must compose yourself in order to fight at your highest potential.

I really love the warm-up exercises in the MMA workouts. These are some very good tips in how to tone your body to your desired level. I will definitely give it a try!!

Thanks for a great explanation on MMA. I used to attend a local Aerobic Kickboxing class and loved it but have recently looked in to Martial Arts and now to see the benefits from the MMA workout, I am definitely inspired to give it a go.

Using MMA to focus on your emotional control is fantastic and interesting to see that MMA works with this aspect.

    Great thanks!

This really motivates me to get out and do MMA again. The problem for me is motivation. I know I need to get in shape. MMA seems like it helps on so many levels. I know I need more discipline and emotional control and MMA seems to give me that.

I will tell everyone about this site so in can get some info on MMA fighting. Because I really love the warm-up exercises in the MMA workouts.

I love MMA myself. I do workouts involving weights and i work on my cardio as well. I do not train to be a MMA fighter, but its always good to see more people training to do so.
One issue with this post is the second paragraph. “Martial arts have been around for a long time”. How long is that long time? Im not asking from my perspective, but im asking to a prospective fighter.
This is a very important piece of information for anything a person is getting involved in.
The next issue I see is that the “warm up” and “cardio exercises” both start out using the same words “Part of”. This is not a big factor of the article, but if a reader does notice this, it can be a very annoying repetition.
Im no English major, but I did just finish my first semester sitting through a boring Composition class haha.
Anyways, I love MMA, some of my best friends are attending MMA camps and training for the big time. I would love to do so, but I just do not have the time to balance class, work, studying, and my money.
Overall very informative article and covered a lot if not most of the bases of the sport.

This sounds like an excellent workout if you’re into that stuff but most people don’t have a use for it. Although i do think it would benefit as a healthy way to release stress, anger, and tension.

Very interesting and well written article. I have been looking for a decent MMA workout for a while now that I am training at my University. The instructor knows specific moves but is horrible when it comes basic conditioning and warm ups. This is basic knowledge but is critical if you want to be even remotely successful when it comes to MMA fighting. Thank you for this article, I will definitely put this information to good use with my group at the gym.

Wow , amazing post , i like when girls training…. its perfect workout….

I like the overall work out that is laid out in this article. I love how at the beginning your make the notice of warning people about over doing it and safety is first. I know too many people that just dive right into training without taking the warm up steps to get their bodies used to the entry levels of a sport. I love it when I see one of my other male friends acting all macho and going right into the workout then 20 mins later they are dying of doing too much to soon or a pulled muscle. Call me mean but if you don’t warm up correctly, you will fail.

  16. Angie Nelson

The most appealing aspect of the MMA Workout in my opinion are the mental and emotional involvement. I find mindless workouts boring and quickly bail. The mental and emotional aspects of MMA are both empowering and stimulating, something lacking in many exercise regiments.

Fantastic blog very informative, as for MMA I actually have never had it explained to me before but through reading this I now know what’s involved, and I must say I’m impressed and exited. Exited because I’ll start doing MMA and I know it will work out for me as I can get very motivated and it says you can’t be fearful, angry or be nervous, which I’m none of those.
